Heading into the 2021 season it looked like the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger could have parted ways. Ben Roethlisberger even said he didn't know he would come back after Maurkice Pouncey retired. Eventually, the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger would come together to finally make it happen. Ben did sign a one-year deal to come back to the Steelers and stuck to his word by taking a pay cut to help the Steelers.
Art Rooney II on Ben Roethlisberger: "We wanted Ben back," said Rooney. "The key to it was to be able to restructure his contract in a way that allowed us to keep Ben and be able to sign some other players. Ben cooperated with that, was willing to make some changes in his contract, and that allowed us to keep him on the team this year which was always our goal."
The Steelers President has been very transparent in regards to Ben Roethlisberger. It was certain media members who started to confuse everyone. There was a report put out about the Steelers playing chicken with Ben Roethlisberger, but the very next day the Steelers got a deal done. Anything for clicks I guess. The only thing that matters is Ben Roethlisberger will be back in 2021. It is unclear if Ben will want to play past the 2021 season, but we will just have to wait and see how the 2021 season plays out.
The Steelers have one of the toughest schedules in 2021 and they have lost some key players as well. Time will tell if Ben Roethlisberger will walk away from football the way he planned on walking out. Ben did get his way by keeping JuJu Smith-Schuster and the Steelers got their way by keeping Ben Roethlisberger while cutting some cap to keep more players. Now it is up to Ben Roethlisberger to write the ending of a Hall of Fame career going forward. Only Ben knows when he is done, but when he is done I would expect him to be a First-Ballot Hall of Famer. There is no question about it.
