Everyone thought JuJu Smith-Schuster was going to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021 offseason. Much of the National Media thought he would get a major contract with at least one NFL team, but that didn't seem to be the case because the market tanked due to Covid-19. No one wanted to pay JuJu in the offseason and the Ravens tried to pry him from Pittsburgh by offering him the most money. So JuJu decided to stay loyal to Pittsburgh and sign a one-year deal to stay with the team that drafted him. I believe this was very smart on his part because the Steelers love loyalty.
Now JuJu Smith-Schuster will walk into 2021 looking to get a longer-term contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. If he plays up to par in 2021 I believe the Steelers should eventually get a longer-term deal done with him. After all, he showed he was loyal to Pittsburgh so why not show your loyalty back by signing him to a longer-term deal and make him a Pittsburgh Steeler for most of his youth? It is a win-win situation all around.
Bleacher Report feels this is a make-or-break season for JuJu Smith-Schuster. Clearly, the majority of NFL teams feel he is not a number 1 wide receiver, but he is one of the most consistent slot receivers in the NFL. Bleacher feels JuJu had the opportunity to show he was a number 1 wide receiver in 2020, but he flopped again. He caught 97 passes for 831 yards and nine touchdowns. JuJu only managed to pull in 8.6 yards per catch in 2020.
They continue to say JuJu has not shown he is an elite wide receiver in the NFL without Antonio Brown's services on the football field. The unfortunate part is the 2022 NFL draft looks to be very deep with wide receivers just like it was this season so it would be wise for JuJu to take a longer-term deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has another opportunity to show his value in 2021 and look to get the monster contract he is looking for.
