Before writing this article let me remind everyone that the Pittsburgh Steelers were just eliminated from the Wild-Card Playoffs against a Cleveland Browns team who has not won a game at Heinz Field in 17 seasons. It was an awful game and one of the most embarrassing games in Pittsburgh Steelers' history. Art Rooney II looks to have put that awful game behind today when talking to the media.
Art Rooney II on the Browns game: "When you turn the ball over 4 times in the first half. We didn't give ourselves a chance. I don't see how you can attribute that to coaching or preparation. We didn't come out flat or anything like that."
Wait? Did he just say the Steelers did not come out flat against the Browns? Are we watching the same game he watched? The Steelers were down 28-0 in the first quarter against the Cleveland Freaking Browns. You know the team that Ike Taylor said the Steelers-Browns will never be a rivalry or JuJu saying the Browns is the Browns. The Steelers came out flat as usual and got their butts handed to them in the first half of the Wild-Card game. To the point, they could not catch up and win the game. I guess it is what it is to Art Rooney II though.
Art Rooney II seems to say the same lines every season. This would have been a good year to start lighting some fire under the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, but it was the same old press conference. Although he did say they will be negotiating with Ben Roethlisberger on reducing the cap hit this offseason. It sounds like Rooney is going to continue to ride the Ben Roethlisberger wave until all 4 tires completely come off and they start riding on the rims. The Steelers organization caters to Ben Roethlisberger way too much. It's going to get to the point where they will not be able to come back from losing Ben to retirement for another 5 freaking years with the way Art Rooney II is talking today.
Rooney also made a comment today saying if he could bring back the same team from 2020 to 2021 he could do it. Does he not realize almost half the team is set to hit free agency and you still have to pay an older Ben Roethlisberger $41 million dollars!? The Steelers have won only 3 playoff games in 10 years. They haven't come close to a Super Bowl win since 2008. When will the organization realize that change is good? Until they come to grips that they need to look toward their future they will be stuck in the same hole year after year. The Steelers organization is about winning Super Bowls. Not being eliminated by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the playoffs. Art Rooney II needs to get it together fast or this once great organization will go down in flames.
