It looks like Ben Roethlisberger is going to come back to the Pittsburgh Steelers for at least one or two seasons. So many ask why would the Steelers draft a quarterback in the 2021 NFL draft? Well for one it would be a great opportunity to start setting up for life after Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers are already about 3 years behind in getting their future quarterback.
ESPN recently wrote an article about Daring Moves for all 32 teams in the NFL. For Pittsburgh, they said the most daring move the Steelers could make this season is trading up and drafting Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. They acknowledge the Steelers need to restructure Ben's contract over some years to help with his terrifying cap hit as well. By trading up and drafting Trey Lance the Steelers would get the jolt they need.
The Steelers are known to loathe trading draft capital, but that seems to have changed when they acquired Minkah Fitzpatrick and Devin Bush. So why not trade up for the quarterback of the future in Pittsburgh? Lance is highly unlikely to fall to pick 24 to the Steelers so they would have to invest some top picks in order to acquire Trey Lance. ESPN feels next year's first-rounder and this year's third-rounder would put the Steelers in a position to get Trey Lance. If there is a quarterback run in the top 10 the Steelers would need to add another premium draft pick to get him.
ESPN still feels the cost is worth it for Trey Lance to go to Pittsburgh. Now is the time to get a young passer in Matt Canada's System and have him ready to run, not walk or crawl in 2022. ESPN says PAY UP PITTSBURGH!
