The Steelers were well-represented at the Liberty pro day on Tuesday to see star quarterback Malik Willis. Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert, Brandon Hunt and Matt Canada were all in attendance. As he did at the NFL Scouting Combine, Willis turned heads at his pro day. It honestly would be surprising if he wasn't selected in the top 10 of the draft.
Mike Tomlin is definitely intrigued by Willis. However, the question lies if the Steelers would be willing to trade up for him. Just look at Tomlin's face when Willis made an impressive 65-yard throw on the run. Colbert and Hunt looked impressed, as well. This was known before hand, but the Steelers interest in Willis is definitely for real.
According to Dave Wells of ABC 13 News, Tomlin also had dinner with Willis on Monday night.
“He’s a normal dude. ... Eating his chicken wings over there, I’m like, ‘Mike Tomlin’s eating chicken wings?’" Willis said when asked about having dinner with Tomlin.
According to Joe Person, who covers the Panthers for The Athletic, Matt Rhule and Tomlin were the only head coaches at Willis' pro day. The Steelers, Commanders, Panthers and Falcons had the most representation. Four teams had their general managers/senior executive (Carolina, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Washington) and three offensive coordinators were at the pro day (Pittsburgh, Carolina, Washington), per Person. Sports editor of the Liberty Champion, Luke Randle, said the Falcons quarterback coach was in attendance and that Ron Rivera couldn’t make it last minute for the Commanders but the offensive coordinator showed up.
According to A Sea of Red, an independent source for Liberty sports news, Willis also met with the Seahawks and Cardinals this morning.
