Ben Roethlisberger has announced he will be coming back to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal, but it doesn't seem to be a popular opinion throughout much of the National Media during the 2021 offseason. A lot of people in the media feel they can decide when an NFL player should retire because they're 'washed up.' I think the way the Pittsburgh Steelers are handling the Ben Roethlisberger situation is the right way to do things. Allow him to walk away on his own terms. I wish they would have done that with Troy Polamalu. I believe Ben Roethlisberger still has more to give to the Pittsburgh Steelers and it was the right call to bring him back in 2021.
Minkah Fitzpatrick says he is happy Ben Roethlisberger decided to come back to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021: "I'm happy Ben's out there," Fitzpatrick said in a Zoom call during OTAs. "For me, it's good to face a quarterback who does the things he does. On the very first play, he held me in the middle of the field a little bit and made the throw backside. Not too many guys are doing that across the league, so going against him and then going back to watch film, I can see what I can do better and remind myself of the fundamentals I need when I go against a guy like Ben. This year we're going against a lot of guys who are high caliber, so him coming out here early, I respect it, I appreciate it. We all do. It's a great look. Everybody's getting better when Ben's out there."
One of the biggest things Minkah said coming out of Mini-Camp is that Ben Roethlisberger is looking really great on the football field. "He looks good, He looks like Big Ben out there," said Fitzpatrick. "He's throwing his passes sharp, crisp, and I'm excited that he's out there on the football field." That sounds like Minkah is happy Ben Roethlisberger is back in Pittsburgh for another year...
Let's face it. The Pittsburgh Steelers have not addressed the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh when they needed to do it 3-4 years ago. That backed the organization into a corner to bring Ben Roethlisberger back for another year this season. Ben gives the Steelers the best chance to win right now. Not Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins, or Josh Dobbs. So I'm personally glad Ben Roethlisberger is back for another season and now has an elite running back in the backfield. I am not happy that the Steelers have not addressed the quarterback situation and continue to sweep it under the rug.
I believe Minkah Fitzpatrick is being truthful about his assessment of Ben Roethlisberger. I'm glad he said what he said because it lifts morale up on a team who went undefeated and fell completely flat on their face toward the end of the 2020 season. I'm happy Minkah is starting to speak up a lot more because this young Steelers team in 2021 will need leaders like him on the football field. I hope the Steelers can lock Minkah up for a good 5-6 years during the 2022 offseason...
