It is that time of year where NFL teams will send their Coaches and GMs to scout the combine. This year is a bit different because of Covid-19. Now instead of the NFL doing a combine in 2021, the NFL has changed their format to 'College Pro Days.' Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert have been attending many of the College Pro Day's this offseason which is normal for them to do. The Steelers typically will build through the NFL draft rather than through free agency so they tend to do their due diligence when scouting college football players. Might I mention they're damn good at it too!
Today Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert attended Notre Dame's Pro Day. It was not surprising they went to Notre Dame today because they typically love their players just like they love Ohio State and Maryland players.
Tomlin on the Notre Dame Program: "This is a quality program. These kids are exceptional, not only as athletes but as young men. It makes for a special day. We have some personal experience here at Notre Dame. It seems like yesterday I came up here to get Tuitt and now Claypool. Hopefully, we can get young quality men like the two we have on our roster."
Claypool had an exceptional rookie season and Tuitt continues to dominate on the defensive line. Normally when the Steelers draft from Ohio State or Notre Dame they typically never miss with their picks. Claypool is capable of becoming a number 1 wide receiver going forward and during his rookie season, he almost had 1,000 receiving yards. If it wasn't for the Steelers limiting him during his rookie season he would have broken 1,000 receiving yards.
An interesting note today is the Steelers decided to go to Notre Dame's Pro Day instead of the Florida Gators. There have been some links between the Steelers and Kyle Trask, but Tomlin was not present today. It will be interesting going forward if the Steelers do end up with a quarterback if Ian Book will be on their radar. Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah, Daelin Hayes, Liam Eichenberg, and Tommy Tremble are also some good Notre Dame prospects to look out for in the 2021 NFL draft.
